This night I was really excited for. I’ve always been a huge fan of princesses, castles, and fantasy. I knew this would be right up my alley. I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much considering the castle was located in the rural part of Ohio. Probably the most unlikely place to have one. As I drove through the winding roads and my google maps destination became closer and closer, I brimmed with excitement.
I finally made the turn onto the castle drive and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Literally a castle. You’re probably saying, well no sh!t Courtney that’s what it was called, but dude a castle in Ohio?!?! I was in shock. I knew there was going to be some type of castle like “hotel,” but I truly didn’t except to see a full on Hogwarts like chateau. Seeing this made me laugh, since I was so taken back, but now I wanted to see what was held inside. I entered the front door and checked in. This extremely poised lady lady me to my suite which was GATED and closed in by a massive wooden door! Say what? She said welcome to the Kihm suite and left me standing there wide eyed.
I decided to enter through the door and I was faced with a winding staircase up to who knows what. As I climbed the stairs, lanterns lit my way and old paintings of people hung on the walls. I felt like I literally was walking through a real castle! I turned the corner (no door, which I’ll admit kinda freaked me out) and there was this majestic bed laden with a deep red and gold comforter. A fireplace was at its end and there was a chandelier hanging from the ceiling. I noticed another door and realized it was a balcony looking over the castle gardens. I can’t describe to you the feeling of this moment, but I can say that it was one of the best feelings in the world.
I put away my things and then headed down to the Cottage for dinner. I was greeted by a friendly bartender and tons of glittering lights. The food was nothing short of divine and the castle mule was to die for. I’ll be honest, this is when the night took a turn of events. I began to chat with another couple at the bar next to me and quickly found out that the castle was known to be haunted! If you know anything about me, there are only two things I’m afraid of. The dark…. and ghosts. I’m a huge scary movie buff, which makes my fear all that more real. After chatting with this couple and then the server and bartender who joined the conversation about the haunting of the castle, I was petrified. I listened to tales of a little girl in a blue dress who haunted the castle, an old-women who had been seen around the grounds and in the restaurant, and the old owner in the famous MacBeth cottage.
For some people this could’ve been the most exciting thing ever, but for me? I think I visibly turned white right then and there. I became friendly with the humble couple in their late 30s, so I took a shot in the dark and asked them if I could stay on their couch in their suite. Yep, you can make fun of me all you want but let’s see you stay in a massive castle in a huge haunted room BY YOURSELF. That’s what I thought.
I ended up going back to their suite with them and had a great time talking and learning more about their lives. I was glad that I got scared, because I gained this experience and it’s times like this that make me feel the most alive. Finally, the dreaded moment came where we all had to go to bed. With the lights on I’m fine, but I knew once the lights turned off that’s when my panic would set in. Fortunately, I was able to fall right asleep on the couch. I’m pretty sure I woke up around 3am and that’s when I became frozen with fright. I couldn’t move, I couldn’t open my eyes or turn towards the room because my imagination ran wild with what could be looking back at me. I think I laid there for an hour before I was exhausted with fright. I decided I was going to turn over, grab my shoes, and run out the door. I did just that LOL. I went out to my car and drove to Walmart to sleep in my car, in the parking lot. I waited until sunrise to go back to the castle and shower. I thought that if I went back during the daylight I would be fine, but still I had this sense of fright.
When I had arrived the day before I heard lots of talking through the walls. I figured that it was the people in the rooms around me. The night before at dinner I realized that the castle was mostly empty…… I quickly showered and busted my butt out of dodge. Looking back, I was disappointed in my fear because the castle was so beautiful. There probably wasn’t anything there, I could’ve imagined my sense of fear, but for me that was the most terrifying scenario I could place myself in. Landoll’s Mohican Castle was an adventure and I highly recommend staying there if you’re not a wuss like me. I can only imagine that if Hogwarts we’re real, as much as I would love being there, I would’ve been just as terrified too.
